Madeira

Blend garden walks, island flavors and generous time beside the Atlantic.

Green landscapes and an Atlantic rhythm

Find your rhythm in Madeira.

Madeira offers a different kind of island break, with gardens, dramatic terrain and coastal places that reward an unhurried stay. Make Funchal a base for food and local exploring, or choose a quieter setting elsewhere on the island and plan transport around it. An excellent holiday can combine a carefully selected walk, a scenic outing and afternoons with no more ambition than a good lunch. Match trails to your ability and the day’s conditions. You do not need to tackle the most demanding route to appreciate Madeira’s character.

WHAT MAKES IT SPECIAL

Good reasons to linger.

01

Funchal at an easy pace

Build a city day around a garden, a meal and a manageable neighborhood walk. Choose a few stops with time to sit and enjoy the surroundings.

02

A walk chosen for you

Select an official route that matches your ability and current conditions. Confirm reservations or fees where required, and consider a qualified guide for unfamiliar terrain.

03

An island food afternoon

Seek a local restaurant or food experience that introduces Madeira’s ingredients and traditions. Take your time over the meal instead of fitting it between distant stops.

04

A coastal change of scene

Visit a coastal town or viewpoint with a realistic transport plan. Keep the outing flexible and check access before relying on a natural swimming area.

CHOOSE YOUR SETTING

Where to make your base.

Different places, different rhythms. Compare the exact location, access and room details when you choose your stay.

01

Funchal

Consider the island’s main city for dining, gardens and a base for organized outings. Compare central and coastal hotel locations and their walking requirements.

02

Calheta

Explore this coastal area for a stay outside Funchal. Check the property’s precise location and how you will reach the walks and restaurants you want.

03

Ponta do Sol

Consider this smaller coastal setting for a quieter base. Review slopes, parking and transport arrangements so the daily routine suits your group.

A THOUGHTFUL DEPARTURE

A few things to know.

Getting there

Madeira’s airport is on the island’s east coast. Reach Funchal by airport bus, taxi, arranged transfer or rental car, depending on your plans. For a stay elsewhere, confirm the route and driving requirements with the property rather than assuming a direct bus connection.

Thinking about timing

Madeira has a generally mild climate, but coast, mountains and exposed walking routes can feel very different on the same day. Check forecasts and official trail status before each outing. Choose accommodation you will enjoy in changing weather, and keep a lower elevation alternative to mountain plans.

Before you confirm

  • Check official trail status, any required bookings or fees and the difficulty of the exact route before purchasing a walking excursion.
  • Ask about steep access, parking and transport when comparing properties away from central Funchal.
  • Confirm how weather related changes to outdoor tours are handled, and keep alternatives to exposed mountain or ocean activities.

Weather, schedules, trail access and provider policies can change. Check current details with the relevant official source and your chosen travel provider.
